Should You Stretch a Strained Muscle? A Physiotherapist Explains

Muscle strains are extremely common, particularly in sports involving running, acceleration, jumping and rapid changes of direction.
After an injury, one of the first things many people notice is that the muscle feels tight.
The natural reaction is often:
“It feels tight, so should I stretch it?”
The answer isn't simply yes or no.
Stretching can form part of muscle strain rehabilitation, but the timing, intensity and reason for stretching are important. More importantly, stretching should not replace the progressive strengthening and loading required to properly rehabilitate an injured muscle.
What happens when you strain a muscle?
A muscle strain occurs when muscle tissue is exposed to more force than it can tolerate.
The severity can vary considerably. A mild strain may involve relatively minor tissue disruption, whereas more significant injuries can involve greater disruption to muscle fibres or the muscle-tendon junction.
Following the injury, pain and sensitivity can cause you to protect the area.
As a result, the muscle may feel tight and movement can become restricted.
But feeling tight doesn't necessarily mean the muscle simply needs to be stretched.
Should you stretch immediately after a muscle strain?
This is where some caution is appropriate.
Immediately after an acute muscle injury, aggressively stretching the injured area is generally not the main priority.
Instead, rehabilitation should be based on the presentation of the individual injury.
Initially, this may involve finding comfortable movement and gradually introducing appropriate loading without significantly aggravating symptoms.
Research into muscle rehabilitation — particularly hamstring strains, which are among the most studied muscle injuries — increasingly supports progressive exercise and loading as important components of rehabilitation.
So when does stretching become useful?
As rehabilitation progresses, restoring the muscle's ability to tolerate longer positions becomes increasingly important.
Consider a hamstring injury.
A hamstring doesn't only need to produce force when your knee is bent and the muscle is relatively shortened.
During running — particularly faster running — the hamstrings need to tolerate considerable forces while operating at longer muscle lengths.
Therefore, rehabilitation eventually needs to prepare the muscle for these positions.
This doesn't necessarily mean performing increasingly aggressive static stretches.
Instead, rehabilitation can gradually incorporate exercises that strengthen and load the muscle through increasing ranges.
Evidence from hamstring rehabilitation supports the inclusion of exercises that load the hamstrings at longer muscle lengths as part of rehabilitation.
Does stretching actually make a muscle longer?
This is another interesting point.
People commonly think that stretching simply makes the muscle physically longer.
The physiology is more complicated.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found that static stretching improved range of motion through changes including reduced stiffness and increased stretch tolerance. Importantly, the researchers did not find significant changes in muscle fascicle length following either acute or chronic static stretching.
So when you become more flexible, it isn't necessarily because you've simply made the muscle fibres longer.
Your nervous system's tolerance of the position and the mechanical properties of the muscle-tendon unit also play a role.
Stretching isn't the same as rehabilitation
This is perhaps the most important takeaway.
If you've strained a muscle, improving flexibility alone doesn't necessarily mean that muscle is ready to return to sport.
The muscle needs to regain the ability to produce and absorb force.
Depending on the injury and the activity you are returning to, rehabilitation may need to progressively include:
strength through increasing ranges of movement
eccentric muscle loading
faster contractions
running and change-of-direction exercises
jumping or landing
sport-specific movements.
Research supports appropriately progressed loading following acute hamstring injury, while strengthening combined with agility and trunk-stabilisation work may also help reduce reinjury risk.
What about stretching before sport?
Stretching also shouldn't be viewed as a guaranteed way of preventing muscle injuries.
Systematic review evidence has not demonstrated that static stretching by itself produces a meaningful reduction in overall sports injury risk.
Stretching can certainly improve range of motion, and shorter static stretches don't appear to substantially impair performance. Longer static stretching immediately before explosive activity, however, may temporarily reduce force or power production.
For athletes, stretching therefore needs to be considered as one component of preparation, rather than the primary strategy for preventing muscle strains.

For one person, that might mean comfortably walking and completing everyday activities.
For another, it could mean sprinting, kicking, jumping or returning to competitive sport.
Your rehabilitation can then be progressively built towards those demands.
Stretching may be part of that program when appropriate, but it sits alongside progressive strengthening, movement retraining and ultimately returning the muscle to the loads required for your activity.
The takeaway
So, should you stretch a strained muscle?
Potentially — but the question shouldn't simply be “Can I stretch it?”
A better question is:
“What does this muscle need to be able to tolerate at this stage of my rehabilitation?”
Early after injury, aggressive stretching may not be the priority. As rehabilitation progresses, restoring movement and the ability to produce force at longer muscle lengths becomes increasingly important.
Ultimately, the goal isn't just to make the muscle feel flexible.
It's to make it strong and capable enough for what you want to return to doing.
